Tummy Tuck First Week: Drains, Walking and Sleeping After Abdominoplasty

The first seven days after a tummy tuck decide how smoothly the next six weeks go

Abdominoplasty tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess skin, so the first week is about protecting that repair while keeping your circulation moving. Most patients in Turkey spend three nights in hospital and four in a hotel, which means the hardest days happen under medical supervision. Here is what the week realistically looks like.

1. Day 0-1: waking up in hospital

You wake up in a compression garment with one or two surgical drains in place and a bent-hip position in bed. Pain is managed with prescribed medication, and the nursing team helps you stand with support within hours of surgery. Standing and short walks early on lower the risk of blood clots.

2. Days 2-3: learning to walk and move

Expect to walk slightly bent forward because the skin feels tight across the lower abdomen. This is normal and gradually eases. Your surgeon checks the wound and the drains, and you are taught how to empty and record drain output so you can manage them confidently once you move to the hotel.

3. Days 4-7: settling in at the hotel

Swelling and bruising usually peak around now, and fatigue is common. Short, frequent walks around the room or hotel corridor are encouraged; long sitting and lifting are not. Sleep on your back with your head raised and a pillow under the knees to keep tension off the incision.

4. When the drains come out

Drains are typically removed once output drops to a low level, often within the first week to ten days, and your surgeon decides the exact timing. If yours are still in place at check-out, your clinic explains how to care for them, and removal is arranged before you travel.

5. When you can fly home

Most surgeons clear patients to fly around day 7-10, after the follow-up visit and drain removal. On the flight, wear your compression garment, walk the aisle regularly and drink plenty of water. Always follow your own surgeon's clearance rather than a fixed rule.

6. Warning signs to report immediately

Contact your surgeon at once for fever, sudden one-sided swelling, bright red or increasing drain output, spreading redness, a wound that opens, or calf pain and breathlessness. MedAgent coordinators help you reach the clinic quickly, in your language.

Frequently asked questions

Are tummy tuck drains painful?
They feel uncomfortable rather than painful, and most patients adapt within a day or two. Removal takes moments.

Can I shower with drains?
Your surgeon will say when showering is allowed; often it is after the first check-up, with the drains secured.

How long should I stay in Turkey?
Typically 7-10 nights, including follow-up visits. For the full recovery picture, see our week-by-week tummy tuck recovery guide.
