Adults and children are treated differently

In children, strabismus surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the muscle position is set based on pre-operative measurements. In adults, surgeons sometimes use adjustable sutures, allowing fine-tuning of the eye position in the hours after surgery while the patient is awake, which can improve the precision of the final alignment. Will the correction last? Most patients keep stable alignment long-term, though a small number need a further adjustment years later, especially if strabismus first appeared in childhood.

Does it change how the eyes look, or just how they function? Both — realigning the muscles improves binocular vision and coordination, and also changes the visible position of the eyes.
