What happens during surgery

Modern vitrectomy uses very fine instruments (23-27 gauge) through tiny incisions that often don't need stitches. The surgeon removes the vitreous gel, repairs the retina, and fills the eye with gas or silicone oil so the retina heals flat against the back of the eye. If gas is used, you may need to hold your head in a specific position for several days.
