What ICR changes, and what it doesn't

The segments reshape the cornea's surface, which usually improves uncorrected vision and makes glasses or contact lenses fit and work better — but ICR does not stop keratoconus from progressing on its own. That's a separate process, which is why it's commonly paired with corneal cross-linking (CXL), either at the same time or as a separate step, to stabilize the cornea long-term.

A same-day, reversible procedure

Placing the segments takes around 15-20 minutes per eye using a femtosecond laser to create the channel, and recovery is faster than most corneal procedures since no tissue is removed. If your vision or comfort changes later, the segments can be repositioned or taken out. Will ICR stop me from needing a transplant later? For many patients it delays or avoids the need for a corneal transplant by improving vision without removing tissue, though very advanced keratoconus may still eventually need one.

Can I still wear contact lenses afterward? Yes, and for many patients lenses fit better once the cornea is flatter and more regular in shape.

Is one segment enough, or do I need two? This depends on your corneal shape — some patients need one segment, others two, decided from your topography map.
